Nicaragua: Reckless Covid-19 Response

Nicaragua: Reckless Covid-19 Response

On November 30, 2020, I went to Nicaragua to witness the graduation of our sponsored high school students, who were incredibly proud and grateful for the opportunity of learning and accomplishment made possible by our generous sponsors. Though the occasion should have been nothing but joyous, I was confronted with the most horrifying experience due to the reckless Covid 19 response by the government, which put people’s health and lives at risk and caused a devastating effect on children and their families. The people of Nicaragua constantly experience barriers from accessing education for their families, lost income, and extreme poverty, and now due to Covid, they are affected with school closures, which results in the great risk of violence at home, increase child labor, sexual exploitation, drug addiction, and human trafficking. Our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua need our help now more than ever.

I registered 153 children for the 2021 school year, and each child came with their parents, wearing masks.

During the registration process, children talked to me in tears, awfully scared, asking me not to cancel the scholarship. Through the many conversations I had, I gathered that the children lack access to technology, the internet, parental support, and even desks to study from. I can’t help but think about the children here in America who have easy access to the internet, wifi, iPhones, iPads, etc., while children in Nicaragua don’t even have anything to eat. I am begging sponsors, parishioners of Christ the King, friends, people and businesses who have anything to give, to be JESUS’ HANDS and FEET and join our mission to help rescue God’s children. Parents, I ask you to see how many blessings you and your children have from God, and implore you to share them with the littlest children of God and those most in need.
